Common Coursework Completion Requirements An overall GPA of at least 3.0 is required. Students assigned prerequisite courses must also complete those courses separately.
The registration periods above are the standard requirements. Students approved for a shortened study period follow their approved requirements. Leave of absence does not count toward the maximum enrollment period. After completing coursework, students must meet additional requirements, including examinations and a thesis or dissertation, to earn the degree.
Course Registration and Prerequisites
- As a rule, students may take no more than 9 credits per semester. At least half of the credits required for coursework completion must be earned in the student’s own major. Check any additional departmental rules when planning courses.
- In the Integrated Information System, go to Personal Information → Academic Advisor / Prerequisite Course Completion Information to check whether prerequisites are required and the number of credits assigned.
- Students required to take prerequisites, including those from other majors, should consult the program director before taking them. Prerequisite credits do not count toward the credits required for coursework completion; an application and approval are also required for an exemption.
Credit Recognition and Credit Exchange
- Credits previously earned at another graduate school in the same degree program and major may qualify for recognition, subject to the applicable requirements, up to a maximum of 9 credits. After confirmation by the program director, apply within 2 weeks after the start of classes (enrollment) and obtain approval from the Dean of the Graduate School.
- Credit exchange with partner graduate schools is available only for courses needed for research in the student’s major. Before enrolling, confirm the scope of recognition and application procedures with the program director and the Graduate School Academic Affairs Office.
Foreign Language Examination
- The Department of International Business uses FLEX (English) as its standard foreign language examination. Approved alternatives, including submission of recognized language test scores, may be used.
- Check the accepted examinations, required scores and score validity periods, and complete the application and score-report submission within the designated period.
- Results from an approved substitute language course or recognized English course are recorded in the following semester, so these courses cannot be taken in the same semester as thesis or dissertation submission.
Comprehensive Examination
- Master’s: Students may take the examination after registering for at least 3 semesters and earning at least 15 credits. Students entering in 2023 or later take 2 subjects.
- Doctoral: Students may take the examination after registering for at least 3 semesters and earning at least 18 credits. Students entering in 2023 or later take 3 subjects.
- A score of at least 70 is required to pass each subject. Students entering in 2022 or earlier must take 3 subjects in the master’s program or 4 in the doctoral program.
- Check the department’s guidance for required and elective subjects in each major, and the Graduate School website notices for application dates.
Thesis and Dissertation Preparation and Submission
- Advisor assignment: Discuss your research topic with an advisor and apply for advisor assignment according to the semester notice on the Graduate School website.
- Thesis/dissertation guidance courses: Master’s students must complete Thesis Guidance Ⅰ; doctoral and integrated master’s–doctoral students must complete Thesis/Dissertation Guidance Ⅰ and Ⅱ.
- Thesis/dissertation proposal review: Prepare a thesis/dissertation proposal, submit it to your advisor, and pass the department’s public presentation review.
As a rule, thesis/dissertation guidance, including the proposal review, must be completed by the end of the semester preceding submission of the thesis or dissertation for degree review.
- Submission eligibility: Check registration, coursework credits, prerequisites, foreign language and comprehensive examinations, and other requirements. Then register for the graduation thesis/dissertation course and apply to submit the thesis or dissertation for degree review.
- Review and final submission: Complete research ethics training and submit the completion certificate. Following thesis/dissertation review and plagiarism screening, submit the final thesis or dissertation and related documents by the designated deadline.
Applying for Thesis/Dissertation Guidance Both currently enrolled students and students who have completed coursework should normally apply online. Students with an approved shortened study period must submit a separate application form. Check the relevant semester notice on the Graduate School website.
Information for International Students
International students admitted with TOPIK level 3 must submit a TOPIK score report at level 4 or higher by the one-quarter point of their final semester for degree completion. This is separate from the foreign language examination requirement for thesis/dissertation submission.
International students are subject to separate options for the foreign language examination, including a Korean language examination or substitution with TOPIK. Confirm the requirements that apply to you with the Graduate School Academic Affairs Office.
